STOLE PRIEST'S RUG.
OLD MAN SENT TO GAOL. "It was cold and I took the rug intending to return it," was the plea of Alexander Angus Stewart, aged 70, when he appeared before Messrs. R. B. Todd and C. R. Petrie, J.P.'s, at the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday charged with stealing a travelling' rug, the property of Father Dunphy, valued at £3. Sergeant Rowles said Stewart was a decent old man when he had work, but he went too often to hotels. For three nights he had been sleeping out In OtahiSiu and had gone to Father Dunphy looking for some relief and had taken the rug out of the car. Stewart said he was on his way to Papakura, where he had work. "We are going to send you to Mount Eden for fourteen days to get the drink out of vour system," said Mr. Todd, In convicting Stewart, "but if you come before us again we will send you back for three months."
