RACING CYCLISTS.

FINAL SPRINT AT PAPAKURA,

CAMBRIDGE, this day.
The annual professional cycle road race of 80 miles from Cambridge to Papakura, promoted by the Auckland Cycling Club, is being held to-day. Excellent entries were received from all parts of the North Island, and a large crowd gathered here to see the riders off on their long journey, the starters assembling outside the National Hotel. The weather is fine but overcast, with a stiff north-westerly wind, which the riders have to face. The road is in good order with the exception of a bad patch between Huntly and Taupiri. Reid was the first man sent away, going on his own at 11.11 a.m. There were only three non-starters, Yardley, Gooch and Mathieson. With Yardley out Hayes was scratch man. He left to the accompaniment of cheers at noon. The first prize is £12 cash and the Edwards Cup, while in addition to the blue riband for the fastest time there is £4 in cash, the Dunlop Challenge Cup and the B.S.A. cycle. The olficial car containing Messrs. H. Edward, A. C. Herring and the "Star" representative, follows -the riders, as also does a lorry containing officers of the St. John's Ambulance. Those entered, together with their handicaps, are:—R. Yardley (New Plymouth), scratch; S. Hayes and S. Gooch (Auckland), Cm; F. Taylor (Auckland), G. Ball (Auckland), j. D. Dragovich (Waharoa) and A. J. Phillips (Matamata), 12m; H. Lewis (Waharoa) and K. A. Mathieson (Auckland), 16m; D. P. Dowman (Taumarunui) and S. Litchfield (Auckland), 20m; L. S. Pinfold (Auckland) , and E. C. Moore (Matamata), 22m; C. A. Willcox and R. Green (Auckland), 26m; E. Clarke and R. Clarke (Papakura) and E. Nowland (Whakatane), 28m; P. Aberhart (Tuakau), B. Munro (Dargaville) and L. Gyde (Te Kuiti), 30m; A. Rose and W. Pratney (Auckland), 32m; H. Clay (Auckland), H. Johns (Morrinsville) and E. J. Paterson (Te Kuiti), 35m; C. V. Harris (Te Ivaiti) and W. Mahu (Taumarunui), 37m; W. Hills, W. Archer and Iv. Rae (Auckland), 40m; C. Reid (Auckland), 4Sm. Feeding and check stations are provided at Huntly and Mercer, where cartons containing food and hot milk arc to be handed to the riders as they pass through. The first man was expected to arrive at the finishing line, Prince Edward Park, Papakura, about 3.30 p.m.
