"PRIDE IN ADVERSITY."
lii reply to your correspondent, I would, like to say that all the social workers in tlie city "were exceptionally grateful for the Commercial Travellers' Association's drive, and the response from the generous public was 'beyond all praise. I have personally assisted upwards of three hundred men with clothes and hoots; I also took a quantity of clothess to Mount Eden Gaol for poorly clad released prisoners. The men referred to in the "Star" report as staying at the Salvation Army's institution without socks to their- feet and threadbare coats, were amongst the new daily crop of •unfortunates who had come fresh into the city and applied to me for bed and breakfast. Had the same men applied for socks or clothes it would have been a pleasure to supply their needs as far as possible. The writer of the article in the paper had nothing to do with the Salvation Army, yet the picture was not overdrawn. The first thing that the manager of the home, or any other official of the Army, knew of this article was when they read it in the paper. There are hundreds of Aucklandere who are not living in any institution walking the streets without socks and poorly clad, besides the great influx from other towns and cities who drift to Auckland because of the warmer climate. The Salvation Army is given to hospitality, given to generous kindness and courteous treatment. The sin-sick, tried, friendless and homeless are coming to us. They come with their bruised and bleeding hearts that they may find the tender touch of love and pity, which was one of the ruling passions of ou? Master's life. We are in desperate need of clothes and boots, and after my explanation 1' hope your correspondent will find his way clear to assist us by sending clothes and boots for these poor T. E. HOLMES, t Staff Captain.
