AWAPUNI GALLOPS.

HOUSES FOR HASTINGS. W. T. BAILEY'S TEAM. (By Telegraph.—Special to " 9tar. ) PALMERSTON N., Thursday. Conditions were ideal at Awapum to-day, and a fair amount of work was done, the bulk of it being on the plough, which was in good order. Rule Britannia, giving away over two stone, was close up to King Hal at the end of half a mile run in fair time. Rule Britannia will be started in the Flaxmere Handicap at the Hawke s Bay meeting, and will be ridden by J. McDowell. j Gran Chaco, another of W. T. Bailey s team, an acceptor in the Trial Stakes at Hastings, did useful half-pace woik on the plough. . . Hunting Boy (R. Welles) andtOtain (A. E. Stratton) were sent once round oil the plough at a very solid pace. It was a useful effort. Braggart, with a light boy up, and Brown Abbey (J. McDowell) were sent out to gallop five furlongs, but the Quin Abbey gelding took off before the peg was reached. McDowell slowed him down but could not stop him, and Braggart went after him, and they ran home together from the four furlongs mark, the time being 525. Bobbie's Mistake and Lady Alophen, with light boys up, were sent over seven furlongs. They were slow to begin, but hit out over the final bit and cut the distance out in 1.35, Lady Alophen being a shade in front at the finish. Fiery Comet, with C. France up, was worked on the plough. • Fiery Comet is looking well, and is in the Tomoana Hurdles at Hastings 011 Saturday. Brilliant Light (J. McDowell) and Keddar (W. Broughton) took 1.22 for six furlongs, Brilliant Light'being in front when the post was reached.Skyrider (J. McDowell) alone hit out freely to cover a mile in 1.48. W. T. Bailey is taking Sporting Chance, Rule Britannia and probably Gran Chaco to Hastings, and leaves fof Hawke's Bay this morning. Evening Hero showed signs recently of going in the wind, and Sir. T. Petersen left the Rangitero gelding in Hastings to be operated upon. Evening Hero arrived back in Palmerston North last Saturday, and it looks as if the operation has been successful. He w r ill be spelled before going back to work. Brown Abbey, a candidate for the Trial Stakes at Hawke's Bay, leaves for Hastings to-day." He is in great condition, but is a bit green yet.
