EXTERMINATING RAGWORT.
USE OF SODIUM CHLORATE. DEPARTMENT'S HOPES. (From Our Own Correspondent.') TE PUKE, Thursday. A demonstration of the use of sodium chlorate for combating the ragwort noxious weed menace was given yesterday by Mr. D. Munro, of the Department of Agriculture, in company with Mr. W: A. Watt, inspector of stock, at Tauranga. Mr. Munro said the Department believed it had found a remedy for ragwort and many other soft-leaved weeds, but had no pronouncement to make at present as to the effect of sodium chlorate on blackberry. The preparation was harmless to both pasture and stock, and could be used by means of a spray or in powdered form. Broadcast spraying would prevent the germination of seeds still in the soil. Great care is necessary in the use of the chemical, which, when dry, is highly inflammable, and almost explosive.
