DUFTY'S SUSPENSION.

COUNCIL GIVES REASONS. UNOFFICIAL MATCH FOR UNEMPLOYED. The appeal of the Ellerslie Club against the suspension of C. Dufty was dealt with by the New Zealand Rugby League Council last evening. The matter was taken in committee and the following report made in open meeting: "Dufty was suspended for refusing to play football. He was selected as a member of the touring team to play Auckland, and endeavoured to fores the New Zealand Rugby League Council to pay bim for playing by means of a threat. He carried this threat into effect and did not play. When called upon for an explanation and given an opportunity to explain, he was insultingly defiant." This was also added, in response to Ellerslie Club's letter, as an attachment to A.R.L. letter: *'The New Zealand Council have, and reserve unto themselves, the right to deal with players and all matters appertaining to players under their control as they deem advisable. Further, the council are fully conscious of the fact that they have a duty to perform in the Administration and control of the code in New Zealand." A letter was received from the Christchurch League asking the council to convene a conference of all southern "Leagues at Christchurch in the near future. The council was quite sympathetic with the suggestion, but deemed it advisable to await the full «ff&cts of the move now in course of evolution in Auckland. It was thought that such material would possibly be of immense benefit to the southern Leagues. Mr. Ferguson expressed the opinion that some effort should be made to do something for the unemployed, and suggested that he be given permission to endeavour to arrange a match, quite unofficially, of a team of League players to meet a team of Union players. .Members spoke in full sympathy with the suggestion, and it was resolved that Mr. Ferguson have the moral and active support of the council in bringing to fruition the motive prompting the suggestion, i.e., thie assistance of the unemployed- of - the city.
