TWO RESTRICTIONS.

IMMIGRATION TO CANADA.

(Received 10 a.m.)

NEW YORK, September 17,

Inquiries at Ottawa elicited the information that no new restrictions on white immigration will be,imposed. The only restrictions applying are in respect of the amount of money in the possession of the immigrant, and contract labour, due to the current depression and extensive unemployment. With the coming of autumn and winter theimmigration authorities are more closely applying these qualifications than at other times. The contract labour regulation has been in force for years and- prohibits entry into Canada of immigrants under labour contracts except in cases where the Minister of Immigration decides that their presence is required. ;■'• The Immigration Department at Ottawa has denied reports from Vancouver that some 200 Australians seeking entry into Canada there, are being held up and that some of them are _ in danger of being sent back. Officials state that only one or two Australians were detained. .•

Kestrictions of a similar nature on immigration into the United States were also announced at. Washington a few days ago'by the State Department, due to unemployment in the United States. Consuls abroad have been instructed to examine applicants for quota visas more' closely, with the purpose of limiting the number of entries under the provision law which, enables exclusion when, there is a danger of the applicant becoming "a public charge." .... ; Ordinary travellers are no way affected either in Canada or the United States. : -.■ >' \ </' '
