SOUTHLAND BEATS CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Press Assocication.) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. The Southland Rugby team defeated Canterbury at Invercargill to-day by 24 points to 12. '

Southland kicked off facing the sun and a fairly stiff breeze and secured a.try within a few minutes. Bell kicked through from a scrum at Canterbury's twenty-live and the ball went over the line. A Canterbury man dived for it hut missed, and Bell, who was following fast, touched down. The kick failed. A fine try by Hart was the next incident, Canterbury was attacking a scrum . was ordered on the Southland "twenty-five line. The ball went out to the Canterbury backs and Hart, , on the right wing, beat an opponent cleverly and scored, uear the corner. Lilburne's kick was a'poor one.

Southland immediately launched a vigorout attack, which culminated in Metealf scoring between the posts. Diack failed to convert. Canterbury evened the scores when the ball, travelled down the line of backs to Hart, who raced across .and scored behind the posts. Carloton failed to convert. Within.five minutes Southland was four points to the good as the result of a potted goal by Nivcn. Southland improved its position a few minutes later when a loose rush was capped by Purdue scoring. Geddes failed to convert. Just before half time Canterbury reduced Southland's lead when Thompson scored and the scores at the interval were: Southland 13, Canterbury 0,
