The weather was bitterly cold at Avondale when work commenced this morning for the final gallops. The course proper, with the trestles out about 55ft, was available for fast wrok, the going being heavy, but owing to the strong southerly wind that prevailed the ground •improved.a little as the work progressed. Type was the first to work, running home from the three-furlong poet in 39 l-ss. * . Vandyke was allotted trotting and cantering, exercise. This horso looks well after his. racing at Wanganui.

Lineage was a shade in front of Cylinder at the end of ave furlongs, which took 1.9 3-5. Cylinder is not a good track worker.

Panther was given an easy six furlongs, running the distance in 1.27 2-5. Historic (Gunn) jumped away slowly at the mile post, and was joined by Star Stranger (Gray) at the six. .Historic was a shade in front at the nnisn, competing t>e mile in 1.55 4-5, the last six furlongs taking 1i25 3-5, They were not doing their best. -

Waimuri-- and Emancipation completed five furlongs in 1.10. There was little between them at the finish. Grand Tea and Transformer -worked over a similar distance, but were not timed.

Vanesse jumped off at the five-fur-long post, arid wae Joined by Takarunga at the half mile. They were on terms at the finish, in 1.8 1-5, the last four, furlongs taking 55 1 -ss.

Thwsby ettode home from the 'fourfurlong, post in 58 4'55.. The Avcindale Stakes candidate King Colossus was trotted over a couple of rounds of the course, and will be galloped to-morrow morning. TWs juvenile, who is looking exceptionally well, will be ridden by B; H.'Morria. .

Payform sprinted home from.the half mile post in. 555;

Eoyal Ruler and Volimond were sent, five furlongs, running the distance in 1.8 2-5. Royal Ruler, who was on the outside, impressed most.

Clarembre was not doing his best to complete six f urlonge in -1.29 4-5.

Lucky Alice, who carried a lightweightj easily b'eat Lady's Boy and' Te Atiawa over five furlongs in 1.8.

Wan, Lu> and Foxhound got ■to the end of seven furlongs in 1.40 3-5. t

Armenia, who got the best of the start, was beaten by Black Maire at the end of five furlongs in 1.9 4-5,

Honiton did serviceable work, but was not asked to go fast.

Branson aleo did strong work, sprint ing down the straight.

Mosaic ran home from the three-fur* long post in 41 3*63. i

The twQ-year-olda Lady Vane and Llaflfylan were sprinted three furlongs, taking 38 3-53. Lady > Vane was several lengths in front at the finish, and her effort wa3 very promising. The pair went from almost a standing start.

High Pitch and Taumai jumped away at the seven-furlong post, being joined by Jaeldy Karo a-t the five. The lastnamed, who went well, waa up with High Pitch at the finish, The seven furlongs took 1.38 2<5, and the last five 1.10 4-5. High Pitch is booking in first-class order. 1 ' \

Biddy's Boy was going better than Biddy Comet at the end of five furlongs in 1.8 1-5. Snow Lap, going easily, got to the end of a similar distance in 1.9 3-5.

The Taranaki two-year-olds Gibraltar and Easter Time were sprinted three furlongs, covering the distance in 39 3-ss.

Crimestor and the two-year-old Hunting Horn completed a four-furlong task in 555, the former being a shade- in front at the finish.

Prodice, Maori Boy and Desert Glow were, companions over a mile, running the distance in 1.52 3-5. The firstnamed pair were in front after half the distance had, been covered, and nuished together, with Desert Glow tailed oif. They ran the laet five furlongs in Ml. Prodice and Maori Boy both worked impressively.

F. Loomb's two-year-olds Baroscope, Princess Bede, Illumineili and Kiiigsway wore in that order at the finish of thre r e furlongs in 38 4-ss. Illmninelli showed most speed over the first part.

Annoyer, who is very sore, was can;ered once round.

Air King, alone, and carrying a light boy, traversed a mile in 1.58 2-5.

Orapai was also alloted . serviceable work. He looks well.

Flying Prince, Awamutu and IHuininagh finished in that order at the end of five furlongs, which they covered in 1.8 2-5. Awamutu was in front till the last furlong, but Flying Prince finished too strongly for him. H. Wiggins has been engaged to ride Royal Ruler in the Flying Handicap on Saturday. ,_ Arrivals.
