WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

TAUPIRI,

A successful meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Taupiri Hall, when over fifty people were present. Miss Eoskruge presided. After the business of the day was concluded songs were given by Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Volamere, piano solo by Mrs. A. Scott, and a word, competition by Mrs. Sowerby, •which was won by Miss Jones. .A,.stall for the sale of flower plants and fancy work, in charge of Mrs:' Smith, was well patronised. . The.' "roll call" of "curios was very interesting. Hostesses .for the day were Mesdames Hunter, Day, Volalriere and Butt. ' "

TE UKU. The. usual monthly meeting of the Te Uku branch of the Women's Institute was'held 011 September 4. Remits for the annual conference were read • arid discussed. Great interest was shown in, the exhibition of old articles bought by members, especially in; some beautifiil Dresden china, arid a very old' handembroidered' child's frock. A' competition arranged by Mrs: Eeatherstonliaugh, was won by; Miss .V. Bates, with Miss V. Gra'nt second,' and Mrs. ;J. H. Dent' third. Mrs. Featherstonhaugh and . Miss Bates were hostesses. - TE WHETU. "There was a good "attendance at the - monthly, meeting of. the Te Whetu Women's Institute, over which Mrs. Dolson - presided. An instructive letter on "Diet and Health," sent by Mrs. Wettenhall, ' was read by Mrs. P. Alcock. Mrs. Lake, who is leaving the district, was presented with a bronze cake stand in honour of being the first president of To Whetu, also for the help she gave while in office. A competition of raffiacovered jars brought forth some artistic results, the-winner being Mrs. IL Jensen,, with Mrs. W. Martin second. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames. Farrell and W. Jensen. ■ MATAMATA. ' . The .. September meeting was well attended, and Mrs. R. Stevens presided in the absence of Mrs. L. Ityan. Remits for the forthcoming Auckland conference were discussed. Suggestions from the .committee re the annual meeting and first birthday of the institute in November were adopted. Mrs. A. Crickett read .an essay 011 "Women's. Institutes," a copy of. which had been sent to ,tlie Wellington- conference competition. Mrs. Stubbing gave a demonstration on "Sealing Wax Painting," This was entirely new?to most members, and much appreciated. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Alquist, McCreadv, D. Montague, and J. Montague. Mrs. R. Stevens was elected as second delegate to the Auckland conference. >

ALBANY. The monthly- meeting of the Alba'ny Women's Institute took place oil September .*?, when Mrs. B. Dickson presided. After business was disposed of,\ some interesting letters were read from. Miss Potter,' who is travelling abroad, A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Mason, in view of her recent bereavement. Mrs. Kingdo'n is leaving .shortly for a trip'to Samoa. Mrs. Victor Macky . gave ' an address .on ' "The Psychology of the Nursery Rhymes," which was much enjoyed by the members, and at ; tlie conclusion,of her .'address Mrs.-' Ma6l;y was presented > .With bouquets of violets and clematis. Afternoon tea was served by tlie hostesses, Mesdames Powell, Schofield and .Miss C'owley. . . '

■ ,VWAERENGA. The Waerenga Women's Institute held its monthly, meeting on Thursday last. Mrs. Hunter presided. Much business was dealt with, including the reading of remits for the annual conference. A lengthy discussion took place in connection with the proposed dental clinic The report from the three delegates who approached the school committee was read by Mrs. Boot, also a letter from the Education Board. It' has been decided to again take the matter to the local school committee, as the correspondence received fr.om the board is In sympathy with the movement. A letter from the Wajkato Hospital Sunshine League, asking for financial assistance for the purpose of buying furniture for the rest room of t.he maternity ward, was introduced by Mrs. I. C. Hall, and all members present contributed 1/. A demonstration of rag mat making by Mrs. Mawston was much appreciated. A "bring and buy" stall was well patroriised; and realised £2 5/8, this sum being handed in to the organisers of the hall bazaar, to be held at the end.of November. A competition brought the meeting to a close. The hostesses were Mesdames Freegard, C. Carter, H. Carter and Gardiner. .
