JOCKEY CLUB MEETING. MELISSA'S SEAFIEIIDVANDYKE TAKES THE MAII>EN MISTER GAMP FAILS TO DRAW WEIGHT. AVRO'S LUCKY VICTORY IN HURDLES. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WANGANUI, this. day. The Wanganui Jockey Club's spring carnival opened in fine weather, before a good attendance, and will terminate on Saturday. ■ The track is in tip-top order. Favourites Pay the Dividends. Five seratchings reduced the field for tho Maiden Plate to within the safety limit, and the .race was run in one division. Vandyke (£290) was made favourite, with Jayson ( £196) next in demand. Tar Baby (£152) was most fancied of tho othere, Vandyke and Sir Mercury caused trouble at the start, tho latter dislodging his rider, They got away on fairly eyen terms, Baskier being first to show out from Jayson, Biflex, Pandia and Vandyke. Crossing tho top Baskier, Jayson and Hincwai were the leaders, a*hd then came Biflex, Acco and Tar Baby. The first to turn for home was Baskier, followed by Jayson, Hinewai, Vandyke Tar Baby, Biflex and Laconic. At the distance Vandyke took charge, and he went on to win by two lengths from Jayson, .the Jatter beating Baskier by half a head. Hinewai was fourth, and then came Biflex, Tar Baby, Acco and Pandia. Hard Luck for Mr. Gamp' 3 Connections. Disrank and Panorama were withdrawn from tho Okehu Hurdles, ten going to the post. Makp Up ( £407) was entrustod with most money, the best fancied of the others being Luminary ( £389), Nukuinai ( £318) and Avro (£191). The first to show out \vere Royal Acre and Luminary, but the latter lost his rider at the first obstacle, where Royal Acre took charge from Make Up and Avro. As they crossed the top Mako Up went to the front, and he led to the straight, where he made a faulty jump, and Royafl Acre headed him. Avro, Shining Armour, Nukumai, and Opa were next at this stage. At the entrance to the back stretch Royal Acre, Make Up and Mister Gamp were the leaders, followed by Avro, Nukumai, and Shining Armour. As they crossed the top Royal Acre, Make Up and Avro were the leaders, and then came Mister Gamp. This was the order into the straight, where Avro took charge, and was going comfortably when Mister Gamp finished very fast on the rails to beat Avro by a head. It appeared as if the rider of Avro took things a bit too easy. Royal Acre was two lengths away third, then, came Make Up, Nukumai, Tall Timber, Opa and Shining Armour. Mister Gamp's rider could not draw the weight (being 21b short), and the horse was disqualified for the event, the placing being: Avro 1, Royal Acre 2, Make Up 3. All the Favourites Unplaced. Mount Shannon, Imateagirl and Auctioneer were scratched for the Putiki Handicap. The Warden ( £415), Spearopa ( £333) and the bracket Advcntus— Great Lady (£205) were most fancied. Jpyspear took charge at the etart from Kahikatoa, Callamart and The Warden. Going into the back stretch Joyspear, Kahikatoa, Annoyer, Tho Warden, Callamattfc and Pedestal were the leading division. Across the top Kahikatoa was in charge, with Joyspear in close atierfdance; then came Callamart, Pedestal, Tho Warden and Shortly. There was little change as they entered the straight, where tho leaders bunched. Joyspear was in front at the distance, and wont on to win by three-quarters of a length from Shortly, the latter beating Grand Jury by a head. Little Wonder was fourth, and was followed by Kilorell, Kahikatoa and Callamart.
