NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

REGAL VOYAGE A GOOD ONE

MIDLAND STAYS ON.

EASY WIN FOR TENEDOS

(By Telegranh.—Special to "Star.")

CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.

Iwanta, who won the Improvers' Handicap, started eight times last season without being placed. She is a five-year-old mare, trained by R. Townley, who has a way of getting the best out of all kinds of trotters. Iwanta stays well, and her stamina gave her the victory.

It was like old times to find a trotter giving away nearly a furlong in a race, but Home Voyage was on 21Gyds in the Improvers' Handicap. At the end of six furlongs he had raced past more than half the field, but he did not sustain his effort, being some distance back at the finish.

Millie de Oro, tho winner of the Belfast Handicap, is a five-year-old mare by Bey de Oro from Mara, who is closely related to the once brilliant Acron. She had a great struggle with Llewellyn at the finish, and showed a lot of stamina to win. Llewelyn Avas very much on the big side, and the race should do him a lot of good. He showed plenty of speed., and he- looks as though lie will race in imjirovcd form this season.

Stowaway, who was well backed for the Belfast Handicap, had every chance, He was well' placed early, but ho was beaten after going a mile. In his previous races Stowaway finished well, hut though the pace was. not fast on this occasion, he showed no dash over the last half mile.

A Good Mare. Regal Voyage put up a high grade performance when she won the Burwood Handicap, for which she was favourite. She failed to settle down at the start, and must have lost nearly a hundred yards, and pursuit of the field looked hopeless. D. Withers allowed the Happy Voyage mare to settle down properly, i and as the first mile was run at a slow speed, she made up some ground. She j travelled very fast over ..the last half mile, and staying on iii great style, won? by a length; : Regal -Voyage: is" a rare stayer, despite an. unaccountable failure' at Addington last months and she will reach a much higher class before the season is.far advanced. . Bay Nut paced a solid race when he ran second in the Burwood. Handicap> being in the picture all the way. He went into. G- McKendry's stable after the August meeting, but he has since been purchased by V. Alborn, in whose interest he raced. He has now joined Alborn's other, horses in A.. Cox's stable.

Proud Dillon paced another good race, to finish third in' the Bur wood Handicap. He is racing very consistently at present, but with bad luck.

Fourth Win On End. Tenedos, the winner of the Seaview Handicap, started three times last season for three wins. He is a halfbrother to Homer and the erratic Fashion Queen. In his latest effort he was in front practically all the way and won as he liked. - He is a powerfully built pacer, with a great future, as he -looks as though he would stay. Sodium, the favourite for the Seaview Handicap, was a trifle slow to begin, but this made no difference, as Tenedos would have beaten him in any case. Sodium is a speedy customer, but in the meantime he is not a good stayer.

A Fine Stayer. Midland, the winner of the Autumn Handicap, owed his success to his stamina. He did not make up much ground, in the early stages, but he came very fast in the last half mile.. Midland has improved considerably during the last few months, and is not yet at his limit.

Young Carbine, in finishing second in the Autumn Handicap, .showed improved stamina. He has not stayed out two miles-well in the past, but on this occasion he. was going on well at the end. A win would not be out of turn.

Captain Wrack, the winner of the Dash Handicap, has only recently gone into W. J. Tomkinsoh's stable. He is a speedy non-stayer afc present, but age may benefit him in stamina. Onyx, who was giving away 96yds in the Dash Handicap, failed to make a good, beginning, and she had no.chance with, the improving horses in front. She will find it very hard to win from her present marks. Avenger, who was successful in the Wainoni Handicap, raced more generously than usual. He was not hurried in the first part of the race, and he had to be hard driven at the finish. Though always endowed with speed and stamina he has been most erratic, but F. Holmes, who now trains him, seems to have got him racing in something like his real form.

Aleron paced a peculiar race in the Wainoni Handicap.. Making a good beginning, he showed a lot of speed along the back and looked a likely winner when he turned for home in second place. Then he dropped back, only to come on fast and deadheat with Ngahuia for second place. Ngahuia has a fine turn of speed, but is a non-stayer. He is owned by Mr. J. R. Corrigan, and is trained for the Taranaki owner by P. G. Holmes. As Holmes has not recovered from his fall at the August meeting, his brother, M. Holmes, drove Ngahuia. Tactless, who has not long been in work after a spell, won the Electric Handicap rather easily. Ho made a very quick beginning and was out clear over the last three furlongs. Ho is by The Triumph, and is very speedy over a short course. Hostess paced a "rood race to get second in the' Electric Handicap, finishing on well. She was the medium of an exchange recently, Mr. J. R. Corrigan trading her for Laplander, who won a good race at the recent meeting in Auckland.

Mercury and Tannhauser were very .lame after the Electric Handicap. Tannhauser has been unsound for some time, but Mercury has in the past been very eound.
