TE AROHA TOPICS.

THE AVONDALE STAKES.

A PROMISING CAN a'E.

α-ntique going well,

Lady Vane, the two-year-old filly by Weathcrvauc —Panama, trained by J. H. Wallace, is an acceptor in the Avondale Stakes. She is going along nicely in her work, and if the course is in good condition may beat more than can finish in front of her. If the track is in any degree heavy, her chance of running prominently will bo considerably discounted. The Lapidary—Queen Street filly, a half sister to Valstreet, who has lately been broken in by Mr. A. Forrest, is to be ridden about by her owner, Mr. Woods preparatory to being put into work. She handles herself very well indeed, even under a, big weight. Tho Te Aroha entries for the Avondale, meeting this month are as follow: — Miss Albyn, Lucky Alice, G-lenison, Lady Vane, Volimond, Black Maire, Taumai, Indolent and Armenia.. They have done a fair share of work, and in point of condition will not be easy to fault on the day. Town Bird, who has been well wintered by his owner, Mr. Irwin Hunt, is at present an inmate of M. L. Lipsey's stable, the other members of which are the Marble, Arch —Araans Queen gelding, the Marble Arch—Bonnie Fishwife filly, and a Valkyrian four-year-old. Having only recently been taken in hand, they will not be racing under colours until fairly late in the season. That Antique has been specially well wintered is evident by the manner in which he is at present executing the tasks allotted him on the training tracks. He promises to bo a better horse this season than last, and should take his part worthily in open class company. Hie* first race this season will be at the Wai 7 - kato Hunt meeting on Labour Day. One of the improving thoroughbreds in A. E. Cos's team is the Sandstar— Waipoto filly Star Lap. She has commenced to do sprinting work, and moves very attractively. Miss Albyn, in. the same stable, is keeping fit and well, while Black Maire should be in solid condition by the time the Avondale. fixture comes round. Armenia and Simit, in R. C. Wallace's team, are regular visitors to the local ■track. The two-year-old by Catmint— Gold Plane, is moving very evenly in 1113 work, while Armenia promises to run prominently in her 'next essays. She is nicely forward as regards condition, and is such an honest worker that if well placed should win races., Master La tour should be ready to race at the Waikato Hunt meeting next month. If produced in the same trim as when he scored last December in the Waipa Plate, he will keep the opposition very busy. Both Y'olimond and Honiton have been improved as the result of running at the Pakuranga Hunt.meeting, while Taumai u'iU soon be carrying Ills owner's colours again. This trio execute most of their training on their owner's private track, but after the opening of the Te Aroha grass course, they will join the other workers there. The two-year-old Lapidary—ldora filly, bred by Messrs. A. E. and A. H. Lennard, is joining the team presided over by G. A. Reid, who just at present is working his horses at Matamata. His charges in full work are Glenstar, Valstreet, and Distress, while Lady Musk, who has just been handled, will soon be executing her share jof track work. A portion of the old course was used for work on Wednesday morning. Slow work was allotted Town Bird, Marble Arch—Amans Queen gelding, Antique a Lucullus gelding, Lady Vane, I Black Maire, Gle'nlson, Miss Albyn and Armenia. Indolent and Star Lap were sprinted twice over three furlongs, the filly having slightly the. best of it.Lucky Alice moved over three furlongs at three-quarter pace, in improved styfe. The fencing of the 'new Te Aroha course and tracks having been completed, the measurements have been officially taken. The course proper is one mile one furlong and 42 yards/the inner grass track one mile and 20G yards, and the plough one mile and 136 yards. This year the Herries Memorial Cup was run over , eleven furlongs, but one mile and a quarter will now be reverted to.
