NOTES FROM WAIKATO.

LUMINARY FOR WANGANUI.

AWARERE WORKING WELL

THE BEGUM RETIRED TO STUD

The Begum has finished her racing career and is to go to the etud. The daughter of Chief Ruler—Lucella showed a lot of speed in lit • races, but she was not over solid. Persham is the name of a two-year-old colt A. Tinker is working at To Rapa. This youngster is by Laekham from Persia, the dam of good stake earners in Royal Duke, Nucleus and The. Fox. Red Comet, who is among the horses working at Matamata, displays an enlarged leg. It is a moot point whether he will stand the test. If Ruby Dawn makes a favourable showing over hurdles at the Marton fixture it is the intention of her trainer, F; Tutchen, to take her on to Wanganui. It is a stiff order to expect success at the initial outing over hurdles, but Ruby Dawn is a promising sort. Luminary is to contest hurdle races at the Wanganui meeting. His trainer, W. J. McLean, of Cambridge, will tako Luminary south oil Monday evening to give him"some schooling before Thursday's racing. The two-year-old Soloist is having his preparation continued on the tracks at Te Awamufu, The half brother, by Hunting Song, to Supremacy and The Begum ia not being hurried, and the wisdom of allowing him time to develop will bear fruit. A Pair of Jumpers. Pendavies and Pendennis are Hamil-ton-owned jumpers who have improved a lot in condition of late. The former will tackle the big country later on, while his stablematc is to race over .hurdles. A two-year-old filly, who is being developed for racing by the Hamilton trainer A. Tinker, is by Warplano from Noretta. The dam of this youngster is by L'imond from Noreen, and therefore a sister to Kaha and Dermod. Kaha is also in Tinker's stable. Taha will be a candidate for the Maiden Steeples at the Waikato Hunt Club's meeting. The General Latour gelding finished second in this event last season. He has been schooling regularly* at the hunts .and will line up in excellent order for his Labour Day engagement. Awarere is to open his racing of the new season at the Avondale meeting. The Swift Flight—Sibford gelding has been hitting out boldly in his track work at Te.Awamutu. Awarere races well when fresh and last season he won £1415 in stakes, having three successes- in eleven placings. Supremacy Going Well. Supremacy's connections are quite pleased with the progress the Chief Ruler—Lucella gelding is making. Supremacy will be having his first start for about 18 months when he is saddled up in the sprint at Avondale. For that reason, it is not likely that he will reach his best until he has had some racing. Hollyholm, who is in M. J. Carroll's team at Te Rapa; is shaping satisfactorily. This three-year-old gelding, by Acre—Great Effort, by ProvocationEffort, is not big, but is a compact sort. He started three times last season, but was not very forward then. Regular workers on the Matamata tracks are Wild Mint and Wild Sea, owned by the district sportsman, Mr. R. Young. They are sisters', being by Catmint from Wild Wave. Wild Mint, who is a five-year-old, ran third to Valcuir and Caulis at the Matamata meeting last season at six/furlongs. Wild Sea is a three-year-old. Well-Bred Sorts. Two three-year old geldings A. Tinker is preparing at Te Rapa have a lot to recommend them in the score of breeding. One is by Nassau from the Comedy King mare Opera and the other is by Top Gallant from Conceit, who gave the turf a useful galloper in Egotism. There is plenty of size about young thoroughbreds who have, done a fair amount of work., G A. Reid, who has his team quartered at Matamata, has the hurdler Glenstar in commission. The Day Comet gelding, Avho has wintered 'well, has a penchant for getting in close to his fences in private, but always . shows cleverness in clearing the obstacles. Motero is among' the team W. Stone has under way at Te Awamutu. 'The Loril Quex —Lovematch gelding promises to play his part in middle distance racing. His slow beginning was against the chestnut in the opening part of last season, but ho showed a lot of improvement in this respect in the latter part of 'the season when he won three races and was placed in a similar number of occasions for £530 in stakes. Royal Ruler, while doing nothing out of the way in the matter of time, is working along nicely* at Tc Awamutu. While the Chief Pal*-—Baby Doll gelding failed to show up in his race at Ellerslie last month, little notice need be taken of that as it was his first start for several months. A Veteran Jumper. The Veteran jumper Hazelburn, who distinguished himself by annexing a double over country at the Waikato Hunt Club's meeting a few seasons back, has been in the hunting field all the season. The Rambler gelding- is still a very proficient fencer, and there may yet be a race in him. He will be seen out at the Labour Day fixture at Cambridge. :'■•'.■■

Temperature, who 'accepted in the hurdles and the Ladies' Bracelet at the Pakuranga Hunt Club's meeting, finishing' fourth in former, is having his preparation continued'at his owner's placo at Eureka. The Day Comet—Heat Wave gelding is in forward condition. As he has qualified for jumpers' events he will be seen out in thie department at the annual fixture of the Waikato Hunt Club at Cambridge on Labour Day. The Maiden Steeples on that occasion will afford Temperature an opportunity, ij Lucess, who developed shoulder trouble and was blistered after the Waipa Club's meeting at the end of June, is still ing signs of lameness. The Lucullus gelding is still on the idle list and it is difficult to indicate when he will again be , ready to resume training. There is a full sister to Motero in W. Stone's' team. The Lord Quex—• Lovematch filly is almost a roan in colour. She is likely to require a lot of time to develop. The Lord Qiiex — Holywcll filly in the eanio stable, has been named Llanfillan. The sister to Llandudno is a speedy sort when in action on the tracks. .-.-.. :.
