AUCKLANDERS FIRST.
INTER-'VARSITY DEBATE. ADVICE FROM THE MAYOR.' (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ; -WELLINGTON, this day. Debating teams from the four University Colleges discussed tho benefits and drawbacks of Government'by the Labour party in a contest for the Joynt Scroll on Saturday evening. The Auckland team, Messrs. C S'. K. Melvin "and R. Griffiths, was adjudged the best team, and Mr. Melvin the best speaker.
The Mayor of Wellington, Mr. G. A. Troup, presided, and the judges were Mr. J. A. Young, M.P., Canon James, and Mr. H. F. O s Leary.
The subject of the debate was: "That Labour Government has been beneficial in various parts of the Empire where it has operated." ■ In .the first debate the affirmative was taken by , Canterbury University College (Mr. C. S. Perry and Miss C. West-Watson) and the negative by Oiago (Messrs. S. Russell and E. S. Tuekwell)'.' In the second debate the affirmative was supported by Victoria University College (Miss C S. Fordc and Mr. A. E. Hurley), and the negative by Auckland. The opinion of the judges was conveyed to the audience hy the chairman, who said their decision, in awarding first place to Auckland'as a team and to Mr. Melvin as a speaker was unanimous. He would like to say that generally speaking the competitors lacked positiyeness in presenting their arguments. He also pointed out that speakers should always remember to look at their audience, and to speak to the most remote person in the hall. \' :
