DEFEAT OF TILDEN.

NEW YORK, August 7
At Southampton (New York) Frank Shields, of New York, a youth, sprang a sensation on Thursday by defeating W. T. Tilden, the national singles champion, 6—l, 2—6, 6—l in the Meadow Club invitation lawn tennis tournament. Another New York youth, Sidney Wood, defeated Lott. G—4, 3—6, 9—7.
