WATERFRONT ROAD.
KOHIMARAMA BEACH IN
DANGER
RESIDENTS SAY "HANDS OFF."
A strong deputation of Tamaki ratepayers and residents waited on the Auckland City Council to protest against the proposal to run the waterfront road along the Kohimarama waterfront. The deputation objected to the spoiling of the fine beach now existing in the bay. The proposal would quite ruin the beach. The deputation asked that the council respect the plea "Hands off the beach between Grey'g Hall and the bathing sheds." There were general alternatives for carrying the waterfront road on, but none had been endorsed. Whatever was done the beach should be saved. In reply to Mr. J. R. Lundon, Mr. Fawcett said a suitable alternative for a road would be to straighten Eltham Road and resume certain necessary portions of land that would be required. Mr. Hubber siad the residents would rather wait five years for the Eltham Road scheme than have the beach spoiled. The council decided to send the matter to the works committee for a report. The deputation, which included several ladies, was introduced by Miss Basten, a member of the council. The speakers were Messrs. Hubber, Fawcett and Jordan.
