SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The fortnightly dance and card evening of the Holy Trinity Social Club was held in the Parish Hall last Tuesday evening. The members of the Pukekohc Literary and Social Club were, the guests of the evening. Mr. H. Lovell, the president of the club, -welcomed the guests. Mr. Moncrief replied 011 behalf of the visitors.

To mark the fact of their being the oldest residents at Surfdale and to do them honour a reception was given to Mr. and Mrs. P. Atkinson by Mrs. Bradley and Mr. and Mrs. J. Turner. Musical items were given by Miss Buckton and Miss Savage, also by Mr. Johnstone and Mr. Savage, the pianist being Mrs. G. Miller. Among the guests present were: —Mr. W. Pycott and Mr. H. Audas and Miss N. Audas. Dancing was enjoyed by old and young. A presentation was made by Mr. Morrison 011 behalf of the gathering.

A successful evening given by Miss Evelyn De Suza was held on Wednesday evening, when the guest -of honour was her sister, Miss Edna De Suza, whose marriage to Mr. David Hammand will shortly take place. Games, dancing and competitions helped the evening to pass pleasantly. Among those' present were: Mesdames De Suza, Hammand, Moorcraft, Woodcock, Speir, Sliersar, Misses Edna De Suza, E. De Suza, N. The Bays water - Belmont Women's Society held its monthly meeting this week at the clubhouse, Bayswater. Mrs. B. Smith, vice-president, presided. The business of the society was put through, and then the ladies, working under .the supervision of. Mesdames. Smith, Brady and Francis, made articles for the Widdicombe Fair, which is to bo held later in the year. Afternoon tea brought a profitable afternoon to a close. A dance was given in St. Georges Hall, Epsom, on Wednesday evening by the members of the St. George s gymnasium. The hall was tastefully decor-/ ated with streamers. Members of the Putaruru branch of the Women's Division met Mrs. Poison, the founder of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, who was visiting Putaruru. Mrs. Poison, introduced by the president, Mrs. Campbell, congratulated the branch on having commenced negotiations for the building of a rest room and gave interesting facts concernin" the general management of other rest rooms which other Women's Division branches had built. She touched upon the varied uses to which such buildings'were put. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Poison for her interesting address. At the conclusion of the meeting an adjournment was made to Mrs. Simpson's tearooms, where a dainty afternoon tea was served. y. 4* * The annual dance of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union took place on Wednesday evening when the Putaruru Town Hall was tastefully decorated with .blue and gold ribbons, suspended from the middle of the hall, while the walls were hidden by masses of greenery, tied in the centre with crolden ribbons. Nikau palms added an attractive touch. The stage was arranged as a drawing room, and with easy chairs and rugs it proved popular with tho older members of the gathering as a sitting-out place. The attendance was large and the scene was a brilliant one. Caps worn by many of the dancers added to tho carnival spirit. The ball programme was interspersed with oldtime dances, which were appreciated by the older generation. Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Iv. Barnes played the extras. A spot waltz competition was Avon by Mrs. Mullane and Mr. Pass. * * * * Miss Rita Wamock, whose wedding will take place soon, was the guest of honour at a "kitchen" evening given by Miss Hazel Nieper at her home in Remuera on Saturday. Iceland poppies and' yellow dalfodils were arranged in the lounge and supper room, and a cheery fire burned in tho drawing room, which had been cleared for dancing. To receive the guests, Miss Nieper wore a black satin beaute frock, with -black lace coatee, and Miss Warnock's frock was of black panne velvet and lace, with touches of rose pink. Syms. * » » A successful concert, organised by Mrs. Ivirkwood in aid of the new greens for the Onehunga Croquet Club, was held on Tuesday evening in the Onehunga Presbyterian Hall. A varied programme was presented by Mrs. Foster's Trio, violinist Miss Taylor, 'cellist Mrs. Foster, and pianist Miss Parker. Songs were contributed by Miss Aimee Clapham, Miss Bertha Thompson and Mr. John McDougall. Recitations were given by Miss Alethea Dalton and Master Jack Pollard, and humorous sketches by Mr. Alan' McSkimming. "Kardo" mystified the audience with an exhibition of card tricks and sleight of hand. In a one-act farce entitled "The Useful Screen," the parts were taken by Miss Alethea Dalton, Miss Muriel Smith, Miss Kathleen Ivirkwood, Miss Jessamine Kirkwood and Mr. Sherwood Connor. Miss Parker acted as accompanist and Mr. Erie Cowell as stage manager. * » « # The monthly meeting of the ladies' committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance, and three new members—Mesdames Scott, Tyler and Cheney —were elected. The president, Mrs. Arthur, read her report of the stall at the Winter Exhibition,' which showed satisfactory financial results and also aroused interest in the work and objects of the society, as evidenced by the enrolment of new members, both adult and junior. Members were thanked for their willing and faathful attendance at the stall daily. After dealing with matters pertaining to the proposed shop and other arrangements for animal welfare week, the meeting adjourned to the Queen's tearooms on the invitation of Mrs. Arthur, who entertained the committee and others who had assisted at the stall. WOMEN'S INSTITUTES. NETHERTON. The women of Netherton, Hauraki Plains, were afforded the pleasure of listening to a very interesting address by Mrs. Nettenhali, organiser for the Provincial Federation of Women's Institutes, on the aims and objects, in the Netherton Hall on August 5. At the close of the address all present decided to form an institute, so the following officers were elected: President, Mrs. Scud more; secretary, Mrs. Epps; treasurer, Mrs.. Adam. A very pleasant meeting closed with votes of thanks to Mrs. Nettenhali for her able address, and to Mrs. Epps as convener of the meeting.
