RECORD BLAST.
GREAT CRASH AT PORTLAND.
SUCCESSFUL OPERATION,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. At the Wilsons Portland Cement Company's quarry yesterday the largest blast in the history of New Zealand, if not of the Southern Hemisphere, was fired. Before the explosion the quarry faco overhung like the rim of a great basket, towering 260 ft at the highest point. r Eight months' drilling had lined the whole face with 20 holes, containing 25 tons of gelignite. As the detonators exploded there was a tremendous rumbling and crash as 300,000 tons of rock slithered dawn. The blast was most successful, dislodging material sufficient to feed the works for two years.
