RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH.
SOUTHLAND RETAINS, TROPHY,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. Southland's hold on the Ranfurly Shield was strengthened to-day when Otago was defeated by 37 points to 5. This is Southland's most convincing victory over Otago, whose team, however, was not at full strength to-day. The game was played in fine weather, although rain during the night had made the ground heavy and it became greasy as the play proceeded. Southland forwards played magnificently and were well supported by their backs, by whom most of the tries were scored. Southland dominated the first spell, in' which Otago seemed quite unable to hold the vigorous pack, whose dash had diminished but little in the closing stages. After tlio interval Southland maintained its superiority and except on rare occasions was on attack. The backs showed to advantage and delighted the crowd with some spectacular passing bouts. The visitors were seldom seen on attack, but they went down gamely to a much superior team. On to-day's showing the Southland pack will present formidable opposition to challengers for the shield.
