SCOPE FOR BEQUEST.
WOMEN WITHOUT MEANS.
"MANY ' pitfE, CHARACTERS."'.
PROBLEMS OF EMFLOMENT.. "There is scope for a charitable bequest in the shape of a home for indigent gentlewomen, where many really line characters could be relieved from the harrowing anxiety of insufficient means," states the annual report of the general secretary of the Y.WiC.A., Miss Jean Begg. Youiig women in Auckland have been faced with many problems in the unemployment field' during the past year, Miss Begg reports. Within the association's membership many girls have been out of' work, but every effort lias been made to preserve eath girl's selfreliance and self-confidence.
Regardless of membership, Miss Begg estimates that during the year an attempt has been made to find employment for 190; girls, and 140 have been placed' in positions. Where necessary, girls have been given free board, equipped with warmer clothing, and sent off in good heart to new positions. Miss Begg states that the association has a good understanding with employers and business colleges when girl's are being placed in trades and professions. The older woman is most difficult , to place, and this difficulty is increased, because there is a growing number of elderly women, whose health is impaired. Some of these, often well educated, have very small, inadequate incomes; others have none. They are too young for a pension, and they are unable to cope with even the' lightest duties in a home.
"We have aided many , of the women who are in this position through 110 fault of their own," states Miss Begg.
