(Received 12.30 p.m.) APIA, July 23. Convicted of assault and causing grievous bodily harm to Constable Grant at Papa, Savaii, on June 28, five Samoans were to-day sentenced. Famuitato and Taematua were each given five years, and Vaimaa, Faalu and Kolose, eaeli received eighteen months. All sentences included liard labour. The case was heard before Mr. J. H. Luxford, Chief Judge, and four assessors. There was a suspected attempt to burn an out-house of Chief Afatuasaga early yesterday morning, but only slight damage was done. Constable Grant was seriously injured by Samoans at Papa, a lonely and isolated village in Southern Savaii. He was alone and armed when attacked, but did not resort to firearms. He was admitted to the Apia Hospital.
