BIG ROAD RACE,
WAIMATE TO CHRISTCHURCH,
The longest and most important road race ever lield in the Dominion will take place on Saturday, October 4, when the North Canterbury Centre .of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen's Union will stage the Waimate to Christchurch road race, a distance of 140 miles. This race takes the place! of. the famous Timaru to Christchurch road race, which event has been held on twenty-two occasions since 1899. The course from Waimate to Christchurch is an ideal one for road racing, being practically level; the roads are good, with several miles of bitumen and, concrete. The big race is causing considerable interest in Canterbury, and a large number of riders haye already signified their intention of competing. Nominations are expected from all over the Dominion. The race will also decide the road championship of New Zealand, and the winner of the fastest time will be decorated with the blue'ribbon. A particularly attractive prize list has been prepared. ; The arrangements for the race are in the hands of Mr. P. C„ Lucas, Christchuch, who has organised the Timaru to Christchurch road race on nine occasions.
