LEYS' INSTITUTE ORCHESTRA
YOUNG PLAYERS COMMENDED.
The Leys Institute Orchestra gave a concert at the Leys Institute last night, which was broadcast from IYA. The programme was as follows:—Selection, "Katinka"; niorceau, "Cavatina"; "Hymn to the Sun" (solo violin, Master Harold Taberner); entr'acte, "Rosamunde" and "Spring Song"; waltz, "Elfentanz"; selection, "Irish Folk Songs"; and incidental music to "Monsieur Beaucaire." . A violin solo was played by Master Wheeler, and a flute solo by Master O'Connor.
Mr. Phil Mohr, veteran conductor and bandmaster, gave the young players a few words of advice, and congratulated them on their performance. The improvement in the orchestra, he said, was most marked, and, in an age of mechanical music, it boded well for the future of ■orchestral music in the city, that an orchestra composed, in the main, of young players, was capable of such a fine performance.. Auckland's musicians were deeply grateful to the Leys Institute for foistering this movement.
Master Harold Taberner led the orchestra with distinction, and Mr. Harold Baxter conducted.
