ANOTHER POLL?

NEWMARKET DISCUSSION.

ROADING LOAN PROPOSAL.

Although it had been decided at a special meeting not to hold another poll of ratepayers on the proposal to I>oitow £29,000 for the widening of Station, Street, the Newmarket Borough Council decided last night to obtain an opinion from tho Local Government Loans Board as to whether another poll may legally bo taken. Tho first poll was held on July 10 and the voting was even.

When the minutes of the special meeting came up for confirmation Mr. K. Newport objected, stating that the provisions of the Municipal Act, 1920, were not complied with when the meeting was called. He also sent a letter stating that the meeting was irregular, because two clear days' notice had not been given. A resolution that the confirmation, of the minutes be deferred until the next meeting of the council was proposed by Mr. T. C. Latham, who suggested that the borough solicitor should be asked to furnish an opinion, of their validity. He also moved that the Loans Board bo asked whether another poll 'could be taken. Mr. W. J. Jeffrey seconded the motion and Mr. W. Hughes asked Mr. Latham if he would be agreeable to hold another poll if the Loans Board approved. "I would like to leave it to the council," said Mr. Latham. A petition signed by 130 ratepayers, asking for another poll, was considered in committee, and the council decided to await the decision of the Loans Board before taking action.
