THE TWO-POUND LOAF.
COMPARISONS OF PRICES,
Apropos of the probable effect upon the price of bread in New Zealand if existing I duties were removed the following figures, giving the cash price of the 21b loaf in the United States, Canada, and Australia, where wheat is particularly cheap at the present time, are supplied by the Department of Industries and Commerce. They were received by cable last week:—New York Bd, Chicago 9 1 /4 d, Toronto Winnipeg Bd, Sydney (city) sd, Sydney (suburbs) s¥/d, Melbourne (city) 5d to 5%d, Melbourne (suburbs) 5%d.
The cash price in New Zealand to-day for tfre, 21b loaf .is as. follows: —Dunedin sVkl, Christchurch 6d, Wellington 6d to 6%d, Auckland 6d to 6'/id.
The "Christchurch Press," in (fusing the tbove figures, states they do not support the argument that if wheat could be imported free bread prices in the Dominion could he reduced. It may be added that they do not prove the contrary. It is obviously futile to compare costs in countries whose wage standards differ so widely aa do those of the United States and New Zealand.
