SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A fortnightly old-time dance was held in the Papatoetoe Town Hall last evening. There was a good attendance. Competitions were won by Miss H. Thomas, Mrs. Parker and Messrs. L. Billington and Chalmers.

A branch of the Home Economic Club, Dunedin,)has lately been formed in New Plymouth. As the name suggests, the object is to discuss items of interest in the home. An interesting and instructive lecture was given by Miss Molly Campbell, B.Sc. in Home Science, on "A school luncheon from a dietetic point of view."

On Thursday evening at tji e rooms of the Y.W.C.A. the Women's Progressive Club entertained Miss Yuki Kumaru, who gave a very interesting talk on the typical "Japanese houses and the interior decoration of the same. The speaker also displayed the dress of her country. During the evening solos were sung by Mesdames Rattray and Sykes, and were very much enjoyed by all present. Supper was served by Mesdames Croton and Murdoch.

The Mount Albert branch of the League of Mothers held the monthly meeting' in the Presbyterian Hall on Thursday. The president, Mrs. Turner, presided. After the usual business had been transacted, Mrs. Backhouse gaye a pianoforte solo, which was much appreciated. A debate then took place on "Should Children Have Pocket Money." The following ladies took part:—Affirmative, Mesdames Bailey (leader), Jenkins, Smith and Pearce; negative, Mesdames Utting (leader), Hollingsworth, Browne and Mcßride. An interesting discussion took place. Votes were in', favour of the negative. Afternoon tea was then served by a committee with Mrs. Sharpies as convener. • * * »

The Senior Club connected with St. Michael's its monthly dance on Tuesday evening. The hall was specially decorated for the occasion by Mr. C. Eaton in tones of deep crimson, orange and blue, the same colouring being repeated on the stage, which was screened with red trellising and an arch as a background for red and orange flowers and ferns. St. Michael's orchestra played excellent music, several oldtime dances being introduced. The old military two-step was encored again and again. Amongst' those present were: Mesdames Sharp, black crepe de chine; T. H. Jones, bronze taffeta; C. Eaton, henna satin; Buckley, beige crepe de chine; Blackwell, electric blue taffeta; Hedges, white satin; Misses Grace Pi ggot, wine panne velvet; Edyth Piggot, beige celanese; 0. Sinclair, black polka dotted net; V. Blackwell, phlox pink taffeta; Blatch,, powder blue crepe de chine and silver lace; A. Follett, apple green; taffeta and silver lace; U. Harris, pearl grey lace, and crepe de chine; M. Keeley, lilac taffeta; W. Belton, silver lace frock; P. Catchpole, rose pink satin; O. Howe, cyclamen crepe de chine and gold lace; M. Purcell, shell pink georgette; T. Agate, white georgette and lace; S. • Davis, pink hand-stencilled georgette; E. White, black crepe de chine.

j At the Victoria League rooms, Shortland Street, yesterday, an At Home, at which there was a large attendance-of members, was held. The rooms were artistically decorated with huge howls of blue and mauve irises, and here and there were to be seen slender vase? containing white and golden jonquils. In her speech of welcome, the president, Miss Mowbray, referred to . the activities of the League, and mentioned that the League's twenty-first birthday would be celebrated in the near future. Special welcomes were given to Mrs. Hay, and Mrs. Turner. (Christchurch), Miss Gillies and Mrs. Bamford (Wellington), Mrs. Leonard Taylor (Palmerstcn North), Mrs. Sholto Douglas (Hawke's Bay), Mrs. Cockburn Hood (Wairarapa), Mrs. Bodle, who recently returned from abroad, and Mrs. Fancourt, of Parnell. During the afternoon ■a .short musical programme was given. Songs. sung rA by Miss Nancy Gilmore were greatly appreciated, and Miss Shute, L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., played a pianoforte solo. Miss Gilmore's accompaniment was played by Mrs. Gilmore. Tea concluded an enjoyable afternoon, the hostesses being Lady SinclairLockliart, Mesdames Palmer, jun., Devore,- M: Edgar, J. B. Macfarlane, H. H. Partridge, T. Russell, L. S. Rickerby, John Reed, Fenton, Misses F. and C. Murray, Gerrard and Slato>.

A performance of Martinez Sierra's Spanish comedy "The Romantic Young Lady" was given in the Town Hall, Papatoetoe last evening in aid of the funds of the Papatoetoe Benevolent Society. The cast of characters, by arrangement with the Everyman Repertory Theatre Society, was as follows: — D. W. Noakes, Pepe; Geoffrey Kissling, Emilio; Allie Deacon, Rosario; Constance Martin, Dona Barbarita; Desmond J. Parson, Mario; Bessie Pilkington, Maria Pepa; Andrew Beresford, the Apparition; Margery Ryan, Irene; L. S. Bates, Don Juan; Dennis Knight, Guillermo; Mrs. Dave Simpson, Amalia. The Rev, T. H. C. Partridge thanked the visitors for their performance and supper was later provided by the Benevolent Society committee. Mr. T. R. Smytheman, chairman of the Town Board, Mr. C. J. Mahon, president of the Papatoetoe Literary, Debating and Dramatic Society, and Messrs J. McFarland and W. J. Nicholson were present.

In spite of inclement weather a successful dance was held on July 19 in the Te Hoe Hall. This was the initial dance of a series which is being held in aid of the school piano fund. The music was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Thompson and Mr. T. G. Hamilton, head teacher. A popular extra was given by Miss Turner, of Waiterimu. The funds were considerably augmented by a cake presented by Mrs. C. C. Green for a weiglit-guessing competition. Mrs. Cuff, the winner, generously handed the cake back to he auctioned. A basket of buttonholes quickly disposed of by Miss Mavis Thompson also helped to swell the fund. The local branch of the Women's Institute had charge of the supper and th6ir assistance was greatly appreciated by the school committee.

In honour of Miss Ivy Cane, who is to be married shortly, Mrs. W. F. Hollinger gave a very enjoyable gift afternoon at her residence, Waimauku, on Tuesday. Amusing competitions were held, the winners being Mrs. C. Robbins, Miss E. McFarquhar and Miss A ; Lee. Afternoon tea was served, bringing a pleasant function to a close. Among those present were: —Mrs. Cane, Mrs. H. Cane, jun., Mrs. J. B. Copeland, Mrs. J. L. Fray, Mrs. Henrickson, Mrs. H. Jeffery, Mrs. I. Levet, Mrs. G, H. Monk, Mrs. R. M. Matheson, Mrs. C. J. Macfarquhar, Mrs. C. Robbins, Mrs. T. KerrTaylor, Mrs. C. J. Watts, Mrs. A. Wintour, Misses K. i and V. Cane, Miss Macfarquhar, Miss Matheson and Miss Walker.

A social was given in the Methodist Hall, Papatoetoe, last evening by tlie church, trustees to the Methodist Ladies' Guild and the members of the choir. The Rev. W. Gatman and the Rev. A. W. Silvester were present. During the evening Mr. Gatman made a presentation on behalf of the church of a gold mounted fountain pen and pencil to Miss Edna Long, who had been an organist at the church for four years. Competitions conducted by Mr. E. H. Burton were won by Misses R. Goldsworthy, E. Brown and M. Haddock, Mesdames W. Brown and McKenzie and Mr. H. Brittain. Songs were given by Mr. Venables and Mr. Salter.
