ONEHUNGA KINDERGARTEN

A very large and delightful card party gathered in the Tudor Tearooms yesterday in support of the Onehunga Free Kindergarten, when the president, Mrs. David Cuthbert, held a card afternoon. The rooms had been very delightfully decorated for the occasion with huge bowls filled. with Iceland poppies, and a number of distinctive standard lamps, rich and glowing, lit up the scene. In explaining the work, Mrs. David Cuthbert said that they were differently situated from most of the other kindergarten schools, and found difficulty in obtaining the necessary funds for the work. They had to resort to the collection of clothing for jumble sales and the holding of bridge parties. There were 52 children on the roll, their ages being from three to five, and by the generosity of friends the committee had been able to give the children warm milk and rusks every morning during the winter. A section had already been bought and paid for, but the committee was not yet in a position to erect a building. Mrs. Cuthbert thanked the large number of guests for their support in the work. Bridge and five hundred were played during the afternoon, the winners of the former being Mrs. P. Penty and Mrs. Rex Hook, and of the latter, Mrs. Jackson. The members of the committee were: Mrs. David Cuthbert, Mrs. J. Neill, Mrs. Chapman, Mrs. E. V. Sutherland, Mrs. Val Kirk, Mrs. Norman Wade, Miss Watkin and Mrs. J. Kirkvvood.
