AN ART SHOW.

Art exhibitions of students' work are comparatively rare, and it is a particularly bright and attractive show now being held by the pupils of Mrs. Vigers in Vulcan Buildings, which will close tomorrow evening. For brightness of colour, sound drawing, originality of outlook, and freshness of execution it is difficult to associate the work shown with the usual efforts of such young students. The work is almost wholly in water colour, and consists of still life, landscapes, interiors, and some charming decorative studies. A set of carefully drawn studies of native flora by Bessie Lynes is particularly interesting, and occupies a prominent position in the exhibition. The landscape sketches are decidedly moist and free, their freshness of colour and _ the feeling for light imparting a quality equal to the work shown in advanced exhibitions. Miss D. F. Young's work in this section is outstanding, and mention should be made of Mary Wilson, Bessie Lynes, and Ellice Allison, who exhibits a large still life of zinnias which possesses a charming quality of both tone and colour. Some strongly decorative work on show makes a big appeal. As exercises in colour compositions they are difficult problems excellently carried out. I Mention could be made of many of the individual works which reach a high level of attainment. Mrs. Vigers is to be congratulated on her success with her pupils, and it is a happy outlook for the development of art in Auckland when young students can produce such sound and original work. An interesting contribution is exhibited by two junior students, Leslie Holbeche and Margaret Cowen. It is an illustrated and hand-lettered book entitled " Wonderland."
