LABOUR LOSES SEAT.

CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday.
The by-election for the vacancy on the Christchurcb City Council, caused by the death of Mr. Cooke, resulted in the return of Mr. A. A. MeLachlan (Citizens' Association), who polled 9856 votes. Mr. G. M. .Thurston (Labour) polled-5824 votes and Mr. C. S. Trillo (Independent), 913. • . - - The strength of the parties now, on the council is: Citizens 10, Labour 6, Independent 1.
