FLOATING ZONE.

PETITION FROM BALMORAL.

RECEIVED BY TRANSPORT BOARD,

A petition signed by 1719 residents of Mount Roskill and Mount Eden South, asking that a floating zone 15 chains long be created between Balmoral Road and Halston Road was received by the Auckland Transport Board this morning. The matter was referred to a special committee of the board for report.

The petition asked the board to consider the proposal to constitute a tram section zone from Balmoral Road to Halston Road on the Dominion Road route. The idea was not to interfere with the present tram stopping places, but the general public wished to come to and from Balmoral, from Mount Roskill and Mount Eden South, with the privilege of alighting or entering a tram at Balmoi'al Road stop. Balmoral, the petition stated, was the chief and only commercial and shopping centre for Mount Eden South and Mount Roskill and the tram section at Halston Road was not convenient in that it was isolated, open to the elements and had none of the usual amenities of a tram section. Messrs. L. A. Tozer and W. S. Dingle formed a deputation to the Transport Board this morning and spoke in support of the petition. Mr. M. J. Coyle asked if they knew that when the question came up some time ago Halston Road had been decided on as a compromise, and Mr. Allum said that they were putting the board in a tight position because pressure was being brought to bear to move the section further out.
