ECONOMISE.
NEW PLYMOUTH DISCUSSION.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NFW PLYMOUTH, this day. "The Government is ••.trying to save in every direction with the object of preventing extra taxation being levied, and it looks as • though there is a pretty hard time ahead," said Mr. A. L. Campbell to'-day when the Hawera Hospital Board learned that the Government'had decided not to make subsidies on bequests and voluntary contributions. The board will lose subsidies upon: five
I such amounts. < "I have to notify that in view of- the financial position the payment of subsidies on bequests and voluntary .contributions is ■ generally to be suspended during this financial year,'", stated .Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, Director General •of Health, "in such special 'cases' as maybe, approved by the Minister of -Finance. However, the usual subsidies may be paid. Each claim will be considered- on its merits, and subsidies will not be approved except in cases where the withholding of the same will result in undue hardship to the claimant. In addition to the usual particulars forwarded with claims for subsidy-it will be necessary,' therefore, to state for • what, if 'any, special purposes voluntary contributions of bequests have been made or-' have, been, or are to be' appropriated by; the board, if ■ for internal- purposes- land whether for- maintenance -or capital purposes." ; : ! •'j " ; "Very," unfair,' very unfair,?' commented Mr. W. G. Simpson, a Labour member of the'board. ' ' ; "The Government is. to be. complimented on taking that stand," said- Mr. L.. Nairn, the chairman. f Mr. F. G. Gillanders pointed- out jtliat it was fairly obvious that, the board had little option in the matter, although it was unfortunate that the subsidies would be lost. . .. . ' |" '
