EMPIRE GAMES.

NOMINATION" OF BRIDSON. AUCKLAND CENTRE'S DEBATE. The question of whether the £70 sent to the New Zealand Swimming Council to send the Auckland swimmer G. Bridson to the Empire Games, was a gift or an advance to. be reimbursed out of the donations which come to hand, was discussed at some length by the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last night.

Some of the delegates held that the centre should not be reimbursed until after the total had been collected, and others held that the centre should reimburse itself to the extent of £70 out of donations and that any surplus should go to send Mi.ss Pidgeon to the games.

A motion, proposed by Mr. D. M. Sheffield,'that £70 was only, an advance and that it should be reimbursed to the centre, ■(vas carried.

"It seems to v me," said Mr. D. Mulvihill, "that the Auckland Centre wants to have the glory of sending a team of swimmers to the Empire Games at the expense of the public."

Mr.- Sheffield explained that he moved the motion in order to protect the club for the forthcoming year.

The trouble had all arisen out of a minute of a previous meeting which was rather obscure, and it was not until Mr. P. Stewart, who had proposed the previous motion, arrived, that the minute was understood. Mr. Stewart explained that the £70 was to an end, It had been sent' on the spur of the moment in order to make Bridson's nomination valid. .

Mr. Enwright, who was in the chair, proposed an amendment to defer consideration of the matter, but it was'defeated. The discussion closed after the motion proposed -by Mr. Sheffield had been carried.
