REUNION OF OLD BOYS.

BISHOP LISTON'S SERMON

The annual reunion of the Sacred Heart College Old Boys' Association opened'with a smoke concert on Saturday evening. Mr. M. M. Flynn presided over a large attendance, including representatives from Wellington and Taranaki, and country districts. Messrs. A. St. Clair Brown and A. Nicholson represented Auckland Grammar School, and Dr. E. Roberton and Mr. F. McCallum King's College.

In proposing the toast "Our Old Teachers" Mr. K. A. Snedden referred to the sacrifiaes of the Brothers for Catholic ■ education, and congratulated them on their marked success in recent The Rev. Brother Fergus replied on behalf of the Brothers.

The toast 1 "The ■ Old Boys", was proposed by the Rev. Brother Stephen, who spoke of the growing success attending the association's activities. Mr. G. G. McLeod replied.

The College might well be proud of its sister institutions, King's College and the Grammar Schools, said Rev. Dr, Buxton,, in proposing the toast "Kindred Associations." The same ideas of ■ education were shared by all the schools, and it was pleasing to note the spirit_ of friendship and 'co-operation existing between them.

In reply, Mr. A. St. Clair Brown, and Dr. E. Roherton, congratulated the Old Boys on the enthusiasm shown at the reunion and the College on its record of

success. Mass was celebrated at the College yesterday morning by the Rev. Father Evans, president of the branch association of old Boys in Wellington. Bishop Listori presided and preached a most able sermon, emphasising the importance of Christian education, not merely for the individual, but by reason of its incalculable benefits to society in general. He stressed the need for "Catholic action,' pointing out the duties of old boys as laymen and citizens. Church and State alike must look to men trained in the secondary schools for leaders in thought and practical life: and it behoved them to foster the traditions and principles incaleulated at College.

Proposing the toast of "Alma Mater at the reunion luncheon, Mr. M. M. Flynn, president of the Association, spoke of the traditions of Catholic education, the effect of the Catholic revival in the nineteenth century, and the place of a Catholic College in the national lite. He referred to the achievements of the College, and the prospect of even greater success in the new foundation shortly to be erected at Takapuna. The Rev. Brother Benignus in reply, expressed his appreciation of the enthusiasm of the old boys in carrying out such a successful reunion. TTT . Mr T. B. Guseott, representing Wellington old boys, proposed the toast of Bishop and clergy, to which his Lordship replied. The toast to the patrons was proposed by Mr. T.
