The driver of the car, John Fleming, said he was retired, and had been driving for 18 years. At 5.55 o'clock on May 13 he was driving along Khyber Pas's, and when he was near the Manga - whau corner the deceased stepped off the footpath in front of his car. The accident happened like a flash, and witness did not have time to apply his brakes in an effort to avoid an accident. There was no time at. all to do, anything. The night was dark, and visibility good. In returning a verdict of accidental death, the coroner said the accident was one of many of a similar kind.
