"I beg to tender to Your Majesty the lbyal and most respectful good wishes of the Government and people of New Zealand on the occasion of Your Majesty's birthday and a renewed assurance of the unfailing devotion to the Throne of Your Majesty's subjects' in' this Dominion. We rejoice in the tidings of your improved health."
The above message was forwarded by his Excellency the Govefnor-General, Lord Bledisloe, for submission to His Majesty the King on the occasion of his 65th birthday. A 21-gun salute boomed out from Fort Cautley at North Head this morning, the first shot coinciding with the striking of eight o'clock. At the same moment the warships at the naval diepot "dressed ship," which means that from bow to stern, via both trucks, there was a continuous string of flags. In the city. Government buildings and many of the business houses had the Union Flag flying and all the merchant ships in port were dressed. This evening at. Government House his Excellency the Governorgeneral and Lady Bledisloe will give a ball in honour of the day. As usual, the. members of the King's Empire Veterans' Association will be entertained to lunch by the Mayor, the Patriotic Association and the R.S.A.
The principal outdoor event was the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting, the most important race being , the Great Northern Hurdles, one of the great sporting events of the year. The meeting will be continued on Thursday and on Saturday. Several football matches were played, and a number of hardy bowlers arranged tournaments for the day. Hockey and golf were among the other games in progress. ' • i
