ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL

A, meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night. There were present: Messrs. E. Morton (Mayor), S. Vella, H. Campling, J. Pilkington, G. A. McKendrick, P. R. Lipscombe, W. C. Hill, T. H. Geraghty, F. W. Mount joy and A. C. Tonkin. . . "v -

Jellicoe Park.—The council accepted the offer of the Returned Soldiers'- Association to donate £40 for the • employment of returned soldiers, to be subsidised by the council and expended on the footpaths in Jellicoe Park. The Government will also grant a subsidy of £40, making'a total of £120. •;

Petrol Tax.—The chairman of the Main Highways. Board, advised that the sum of £359 18/1 had been allocated to the council as its proportion of petrol tax for the period which ended on March 31 last. Drivers' Licenses—The Municipal Association of New Zealand asked the council to support a resolution to-'the effect that local bodies be asked to adopt a uniform colour system for motor drivers' licenses, to conform with the colour of the number plate for that year. The council will consider the request before the next season's licenses are issued.

Tenders.—Messrs. H. Bray and Co.'s tender of £60 10/5 was accepted for three drainage contracts. The tender of £23 2/8 by A. Fulljames for plumbing work at three houses was also accepted.

Poppy Day Collections. —The Minister of Finance advised the council of the, Government's intention to subsidise the Poppy Day collections, provided the amount is handed over to a local authority for expenditure to be approved by the Public Works Department.

Shelter Shed.—The sum of £40 was voted by the council for the erection of a shelter shed at the Te Papapa bus stop on the railway reserve, subject to the* Railway Department's, approval.

Dance Halls.—-The New Zealand Grand Lodge of the International Order of Good Templars urged upon the council the necessity for making full provision for complete control over the issue of licenses for all dance halls and cabarets, So as to prevent the practice of. allowing .drink at those functions. The letter was received, and it was decided to inform'the Good Templars that the evil .complained of does not exist at Onehunga. All the buildings used for dances are under the supervision of the council.

Recreation Reserve.—Permission was given to the Onehunga Athletic Association Fpotball. Club .to instal electric, light on their ground at the recreation reserve for training purposes at their own expense. The decided to instal two electric lights, one in each dressing shed, used by the Manukau Rugby Football: Club on the recreation reserve.

Notice of Motion.—Mr. S. Vella gave notice to move atthe next meeting: "That the alterations to the baths and rest room, as suggested by the Loans Board, be adopted, and afterwards submitted to the ratepayers in two separate issues lor their approval."
