BETTER GENERAL DEMAND
TOMATOES SELL WELL.
EGGS UP AGAIN
Owing to the holiday to-day, there was a better demand at the marts yesterday. There, was also a smaller supply of fruit. Tomatoes sold better, though those from the Hutt are arriving in a green condition. It is difficult to ripen them this weather. Island oranges are commanding an improved market, though the price remains about level. Passions are selling freely.
Prices at present are:—
Apples: Delicious, ex cooler, 6/ to 8/6; others, 3/ to 5/; Ballarats, 5/6 to 7/6; Munroes, 4/6 to 5/; Jonathans, ex cooler, 5/ to 8/; Salome, 5/ to 6/; other varieties, 3/ to 4/6. Pears: Coles, 6/ to 8/6; Keiffers, 3/ to 6/; P. Barrys, 4/ to 5/; other varieties, 4/ to 5/. Tomatoes: • Local, No. 1, smooth, 5/ to 7/; No. 2, 2/6 to 4/; Hutts, 4/ to 6/. Grapes: Hothouse, Colman, 1/3 to 2/ lb; Sydney white, 13/ to 14/ box. Persimmons: 2/6 to 3/6. Passions: 4/ to 7/. Oranges: Island, repacks, 10/ to 14/. Bananas: Repacked, ripe, 20/ to 25/. Cape gooseberries: 3%d to 4d lb.
Vegetables. There is little change in the vegetable position. Much the same lines are in heavy supply. Cabbage,- inferior onions, kumaras and celery were very plentiful yesterday. Ruling values are:— Potatoes, Southern, 6/ to 7/ cwt; locals, 3/ to 4/ bag; onions, hard, firm, 2/6 to 4/ bag; soft, inferior, 1/6 to 2/ bag; kumaras, 1/6 to 3/ bag; cabbage, 1/6 to 4/6 sack; cauliflower, 3/ to 8/ sack; swedes, 2/ to 3/ bag; pumpkins, red, 3/ to 4/ cwt; Crown and Triumble, 5/ to 7/ cwt; citron melons, 12/ cwt; green peas, 10/ to 16/ bag; beans, 5/ to 12/6 bag; lettuce, 1/ to 4/6 case; cucumbers, hothouse, ,4/ to 5/ dozen; vegetable marrows, 1/ to 3/ dozen; cabbage, on benches, 1/ to 2/6 dozen; cauliflower, on benches, 2/ to 6/ dozen; celery, Cd to 2/6 bundle; rhubarb, 2/ to 3/ dozen; spinach, 6d to lOd dozen; pumpkins, on benches, 2d to 6d each; radish, 6d dozen; spring onions, 6d to 1/ bundle; carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips, 8d to 1/3 dozen; leekg, 3d to 6d bundle; chokos, 1/ dozen. Eggs Are Still Scarce. Eggs have increased in price in the special and A grades, both for hen and duck. Good quality eggs continue to be very scarce. Current values for first grade hen eggs are:—Special grade, 3/4 dozen; A grade, 3/2; B grade, 2/10. Duck eggs: Special grade, 3/1 dozen; A grade, 3/; B grade, 2/9. Farmers' butter is selling from 1/ to 1/2 a lb. Poultry Sales. There was no poultry auction yesterday, but one will take place to-morrow.
