ARAPUNI TROUBLE.
_ _——• — VIBRATION IN GENERATOR. HYDRAULIC ORIGIN POSSIBLE. Vibration in No. 1 generator at Arapinii has proved so difficult to correct that it was found necessary last Thursday to put the set out of commission in order that remedial steps might be taken in the draught tube. King's wharf station is meanwhile being operated to carry part of the peak load, which is now a little beyond the capacity of Arapuni and Horahora. The opinion is expressed that the origin of the fault cannot be in the powerhouse foundations, as no movement of any kind has been noted in the concrete or in parts of the sets embedded in it, while the other two units, which are identical in every respect with the one that has been giving trouble, are functioning perfectly. Moreover, the vibration is visible to the eye in parts of the machine, but was not detected in the fixed parts or foundation by the finest instrumental tests.
By. a process of elimination the opinion has been formed that the vibration is hydraulic in origin, and steps are being taken to remove the cause. It is expected that the adjustments will be completed within a fortnight.
