WINTER BOWLING.

A WIN FOR THE PRESS. NOMADS IN FULL FORCE. CHALLENGE MATCHES PLAYED. (By TRUNDLER.) Auckland's perfect autumn weather returned just 24 hours too late to suit all. the sports on Saturday, and conditions were anything but pleasant during the afternoon. However, the bowling firtures were all carried through without any more delay than retiring for a few minutes during one or two showers. An excellent arrangement was made at the Auckland green, where the Press and the Printers attended in order to celebrate the official opening of the club's newly-constructed winter green. Instead of retiring to afternoon tea while the sun was shining brightly, and then finishing the games while it was cold and growing dark, the tea was delayed until play was over.. This has often been suggested as the best plan to adopt during two or three months in the depth of winter, but very few clubs have made the change in former years. For a visiting day it has one distinct advantage, that by that time they know who has won, and in the absence of the club presi - dent, Mr. E. A. Craig, Mr. G. B. Osmond heartily congratulated the visitors on winning by six rinka to two, which is rather an unusual result for the Press. Mr. Osmond's welcome was none the less appropriate through being delayed till the games were over, when nobody was in a hurry to rush back to the green, and he was able to couple with it an invitation to come again, which was really in the nature of a challenge to see if the club could turn the tables on their visitors: The challenge was promptly accepted by Mr. R. M. Hacket, who responded for the Press, and it will be arranged for an early date. The Nomads at Ellerslie.

These wanderers Lad a great gathering on Saturday, no less than thirteen rinks going to Ellerslie, in charge of thirteen presidents or their accredited substitutes. Presidents' Day turned out a great success, everything going with hearty goodwill. At the tea adjournment they were welcomed by Mr. A. J. Coppins, the local president, who invited they to come again, and it had been arranged that a response should be made by the president of the most northerly club, New Lynn, supported by the president of the most southerly, Papatoetoe. Mr. Marshall Laing spoke for the former cjub with his usual afficieney, but when it was time for Mr. J. Franklin to endorse his remarks it was found that he was still engaged in drawing the shot, not having heard the bell. However, the Rev, T. H. Roseveare was quite equal to the occasion, so Papatoetoe was well represented. Next Saturday the Nomads will play at the Auckland green, but they promised to go to Ellerslie again before the season is over. The Challenge Matches. By a coincidence it came to the turn of Hillsboro' to challenge for both of the senior trophies, and by another coincidence both .matches were played at Onehunga. As the Dominion Road green is closed just now the holders elected to defend the Denisoh Pins at Onehunga, but they lost to Farland, Gregory, Stringer, Sainty (Hillsboro'), and the latter will defend them next Saturday on their own green, which has been newly top-dressed. The challenger is P. J. Scantlebury (Auckland), followed by J. Dick (Ponsonby) and L. Russell (Remuera). The other team, in charge of Goldsmith, tackled the holders of the Edwin Stars, but Robertson and his men were too good for them, and* won their sixth match in succession. The next challengers are I. Clarke (West End) and A. C. Bush (Dominion Road). The Jordan Pins also stayed at Onehunga, the new rink selected to defend the trophies this season proving again too good for Te Papapa. The next challenger is J. J. Toy (Ellerslie). The Fiji Tournament, Interesting news comes from Dunedin, the council executive having been advised that three rinks from Southland are going to the Suva tournament in July, and asking if any centre could enter two rinks for the Pacific Pennant. Apparently they have already entered for the singles, the pairs and the open rinks, for anybody ,can enter for those three events, "either direct or through the centre. For the Pacific Pennant, however, two rinks will represent New Zealand, and the council executive have very properly informed the Southland people that the entry for that event must go through the association. The Auckland interest in this news consists of the fact that even if only one rink goes from here this year they will be assured of a chance to be picked as individuals to play in at least some of the four or five matches for the pennant. Nobody can yet say how many there will be, but each association team "will play each of the other teams and there are usually teams from three States in Australia, besides Fiji and New Zealand. — J—; CLUB GAMES.
