ASHBURTON MEETING.

j ARIKIWAI'-S SMART EFFORT. DEATH OF MASTER GARLAND. JOCKEY SUSPENDED FOR MONTH. ! (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. ' The -weather was very cold for the ; Ashburton races, but the conditions were better than in Cliristchureh, where rain , and sleet showers fell in the morning. , The course was in capital order, but the attendance was not up to the usual size, while there was a substantial drop in the totalisator figures. Audience gave further evidence of improvement by Avinning' the High-weight Handicap, after racing unluckily for a long time. She is now having her turn, and she is not at the end of her winning. Punchestown won the Longbeach Hack Handicap through his gameness. He has developed into a very solid customer, who is likely to go on to much better things. The three-year-old Flaxbird is worth keeping in mind for a race later on. He is a promising novice. , ■ Arikiwai was handled very patiently in the Autumn Handicap, and it was only in the last couple of strides that he wor ried Starshooter out of first money. It was a smart performance as he was short of work after a break in his preparation, and if he trains on he will do better before long. Though narrowly beaten in the Autumn Handicap Starshooter ran a good race and lie may get some more > money at the Dunedin meeting. Miss Bradbury, the winner of the first division of the Trial Plate, is a three-year-old filly by Paper Money. She has a lot of speed and she is likely to develop into a winner in much better company. F. D. Jones won the second division of the Trial Plate with Craigavon, a two-year-old by Red Dennis, purchased by the Riccarton trainer for 45gs at the Sydney yearling sales last year. He should make a smart three-year-old. The Kilbroney mare Sapient gave further evidence of improved form when she won the Eiffelton Hack Handicap. She only got home by a neck, and had to be ridden out, but this was due to her rider taking things too easily after reaching the straight. Grecnaway atoned for several disappointments when she won the Farewell Handicap. It was her first success since the Royal Stakes, and there was no special merit about the performance as the field was not strong. The Raider made his first appearance in the South Island in the Farewell Handicap, but his effort was far from impressive. He finished a moderate third after being near the rear most of the way. Master Garland tailed off in the Highweight Handicap," and as there appeared to be something seriously amiss he was pulled up at the entrance to the straight. It was thought he had slipped a stifle, but subsequently it was discovered that he had also broken a blood vessel, and he died later in the afternoon. He was a well-grown gelding in the same ownership as Lord Ranald, but his form was moderate. i There was an inquiry after the Longbeach Handicap, as a result of which I. Tilson, the rider of Tariff, had his license suspended for.a month for crossing soon after the start. He will have to miss the Dunedin and South Canterbury meetings—a serious penalty for a rider with prospects of securing plenty of riding in jumping events. Results arc as follows: — HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP of 115sovs. One mile.
