CUP CHALLENGE.

LEAGUE REP. MATCH. CAKLAW PARK TO-MORROW. BID BY NORTH AUCKLAND. The first Challenge Cup match of the season Trill he played at Carlaw Park to-morrow afternoon, when North Auckland -will play Auckland, the holders. It will be remembered that last year the Northland side made an unexpectedly fine showing for a team whose players had but a comparatively β-hort acquaintance with the game, and, with the extra experience gained in the past twelve months, they have high hopes of being able to take the Northern Union Cup back. The Auckland team is a strong one all-round, with a large proportion of veterans, but containing several new players in Campbell and Carter among the backs, and Watene and Pascoe in the forwards. Early in the season a Northland B rep. team defeated a visiting Richmond team by over 20 points, and with the inclusion of star players the Northland side is considered up to the best rep. standard. Ted Meyer, Eod Hamilton and Jas. Berghan, who gained places last year in the North Island team arc again to the fore. Dunn, a fast forward, who scored two tries against Auckland last year, is again in the pack, with Wells, anoted hooker, and new men in Hertzell, a 19-years-old giant of 6ft 3m, and Piltcher and O'Callaghan, both of the big and fast type. Parkes is again fullback, but among the backs are two dasliin<r winders in Whitelaw and Boyd, Wilson, who ie an improving inside back, and C. Meyer and Baker, who are sound players, and are expected to become outstanding when they gain experience. The team will arrive in Auckland this evening, and return on Monday morning. Messrs. B. W. APPEAL DENIED. MARISTS LOSE MATCH. KINGSLAND PROTEST UPHELD. The appeal of the Marist Brothers Old evening and was dismissed by thirteen were that Marists nHved a player named Munro, a membei o P tne Mount Albert Club a second grade team, without regietratioru It was reported at the time that Maiists were informed by Kingsland Jjrtijg test would be lodged. However Man. Saw Park on the day was not completeT at the following Wednesday meet in- of the A.U.L., as the protest Sveled. Meantime, the Management Committee confirmed the JndtadOojjmittee's finding, although the ddUto maintained that his club had not had required notice of the appeal; that the club acted on a misuuderstandin« of requirements in the mattei, and that the penalty was too severe. The club appealed to the council, which referred the matter back to the A.R.L. with a request for information as to the rule on which the Judicial Committee had based its finding, which was returned to the council with a simple covering letter intimating that the authority for the adjudication was Rule 28 In the absence of any further evidence or details of local by-laws that may affect such cases, the members of the governin" body had no option, it was explained, biTt to accept the rule quoted, which makes official transfers of players mandatory, and by dismissing the appeal, upheld the protest. In reply to Mr. A. Ferguson (Otago), the chairman said the New Zealand Advisory Committee had no recommendation to make. _ Mr. Snedden, in reviewing the tacts, said that Munro last year transferred from Athletic fourths to Mount Albert in the proper porcedure. The Judicial Committee evidently came to the conclusion that something was in the recent instance, upheld Ivingslands appeal, and awarded them the match which Martat had won. The protest was that Marists played a players before he had a clearance from the Mount Albert Club. As far as the League was concerned, Munro was, and still was, a member of the Mount Albert Club, no transfer having been negotiated. It was true that attached to the correspondence wae an application by Munro to the A.R.L., and nominating the Marist Club. A request had been received from the Marist Club subsequently for the registration of Munro, but that was not accepted, probably owing to the protest. "Last week," said Mr. Snedden, "we sent this matter back for particulars of the evidence, and, on applying to the A.E.L., we get advice that Rule 28 covers the protest.'" Replying to Mr. W. Murray, the chairman said there was no clearance or transfer from Mount Albert before them concerning Munro. Question of Clearance. Mr. Lipscombe said it had been generally understood that a player going from a junior team or club to a senior grade did not require a transfer, but merely a clearance. Several cases of this had cropped up. On the day involved Marist officials had received assurance from an ex-chairman of the A.R.L. that there was no objection to playing Munro provided he was financial with the club he was leaving. Also when the Judicial Committee considered the protest, Marist had no chance to state their case. Mr. E. Stallworthy said he had come to the conclusion that the xmly thing the council could do was to dismiss the appeal. As far as they knew from papers before them Marists gave no grounds for their appeal. The Auckland League was written to for further details, and it just quoted Rule 28. In moving the dismissal of the appeal, lie mentioned that it. did not debar the Marist Club from seeking a rehearing if it had sufficient evidence to warrant that.
