LUCKY ESCAPE.
OCCUPANTS OF MOTOR CAR. CRASH AFTER MIDNIGHT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday. Driven by Mr. John Cunnison, of Wellington, a motor car was proceeding toward the railway station at 1.45 a.m. when, it is stated, the rear left-hand tyre blew out and the strain caused the collapse of the steering column. Completely out of control, the car swerved to the edge of the road, and leaped over the end of a culvert at the entrance to the subway nearest the station. Fortunately it missed by inches the substantial concrete abutments at the head of the step. Still unchecked the car crashed into an outjutting section of a big hoarding which lines the edge of the road, tore out a large piece and smashed the timber almost to matchwood. The occupants of the car had a remarkable escape from injury. Extensive damage was done to the car.
