A meeting was held at the Lyceum Club on Tuesday to discuss the forming of a new circle to debate current events. There was a fair number of members present, and Mrs. W. H. Parkes presided. Great interest was taken in the subject. I One of the questions brought forward was "Should married women enter gainful occupations." Miss Melville was appointed convener, and two members will be deputed to gather authentic information on the subject that will be under discussion at each meeting. The subjects to be taken will be of vital interest to women and children, and of world value, not entirely local, 'but the discussions will not be confined to these subjects.

A pleasant afternoon was spent by members of the gardening circle of the Lyceum Club in the -winter gardens at Ellerslie Racecourse on Tuesday, afternoon. The weather being truly wintry, with heavy thunderstorms, the roofed-in garden was ever so inviting, with its delicate, yet brilliant array of cyclamens and gesnearias, bordered by pots of Isolepsis grassilis (native of New Zealand), which the Maoris aver was the only grass to survive the flood. A farewell was given yesterday afternoon in St. George's Sunday School, Landscape Road, Papatoetoe, to Miss Alice Hart, who is leaving next Tueoday on a six months' tour abroad. The farewell was arranged by the members of the Orphan Home sewing bee, and the hall was decorated under the super- x vision of Miss Ada Hooker, matron oi the home. During the afternoon a book i of Maori folklore and a travelling iron j and ironing table were presented to Miss Hart by the Rev. T. H. C. Partridge on behalf of the members. Miss Hart, who has been at Papatoetoe since her arrival in New Zealand, almost ten years ago, will visit her relatives in British Columbia and also in England, and expects to return to New Zealand, via Suez, towards the end of the year. An entertaining programme was given by Mrs. Partridge, Miss Kimpton and Miss E. Trimble.
