SUNDAY PICTURES.
In penning a letter drawing attention to ; this matter, I desired to show that a precedent r had been set up for general entertainment of . this kind. I mentioned neither the theatres ) nor, the lessees, but, as "A.E.C." has jumped ! into the breach and stated that the Rationalists 5 use films at the Majestic Theatre, I may be i pardoned for making further comment. Using ) my references to the fact that the new vogue * seemed to point to the general screening of - pictures on Sunday evenings, "A.E.C." has . ingeniously set up a case for himself on aspects I that are entirely beside the point. He says , 5 "Unless he (that is, I) is an advocate for I unorthodox opinions, he will admit that an - association of unbelievers has as much legal i right to conduct its Sunday meeting in accord I with its ideas, as has any religious body in I its own church or hired hall." Granted, but is • there not something ironical about "unbe- I r lievers" purporting to show allegedly religious i or Christian pictures, especially when the religion in these pictures is but incidental to the theme, if anything? The rest of the r queries made by "A.E.C." can be dismissed with the explanation that the cheap diversion 5 was mentioned to indicate logically why people i attended so freely. Few people, including the i writer, object either to the cheapness or the - diversion, but most people would prefer that i if films are to be shown on Sundays it should l be done without pretence. If the Rationalists ) consider "Seventh Heaven" or other films with t a mere accidental meed of Christian flavour ' are but harmless relaxation there is surely, I nothing irrational in suggesting that "talkies" r mioht be run generally on such occasions.
