BURNED TO THE GROUND
TAIHAPE HOWE DESTROYED. OCCUPANTS' CLOSE CALL. EARLY MORNING BLAZE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAIHAPE, thie day. At 4 o'clock this morning a fiveroomed residence owned by Mr. Simon Cartier, of Papakai Road, was burned to th£ ground. The only occupants at the time were Mrs. Cartier, her baby and a small boy, Mr. Cartier being absent on a deer stalking expedition. The blaze, which originated in the kitchen, awakened Mrs. Cartier, giving her barely time to leave the house with her family, and she was able to save only a few personal effects. Aβ the house was outside the borough boundary no water was available to subdue the flames. It is understood that the insurance on the house is £600 and on the furniture £400.
