SCENIC DRIVE.
NEW ML ALBERT ROAD. ACCESS MADE EASY. OPENING NEXT SATURDAY. Owairaka Park is the name given to the new domain which is to be developed from the crater on Mount Albert. The name is particularly appropriate, since it wttl perpetuate the name of a Maori chieftainess of the Xgatiawa tribe, after whom the Maoris named the mount. A new motor drive which has been recently completed around the mount will give access to the crater, comprising an area of about ten acres. The drive, metalled with ecoria and about one-third of a mile long, will provide motorists rath a glorious view of the Waitemata and Manukau Harbours and the surrounding suburban areas. Access to the drive is secured by way of the south end of Domain Road, off Mount Albert Road. Construction work was financed out of a loan of £1500 granted by Mount Albert ratepayers about a year ago. The floor of the old quarrying pit is to be levelled and grassed, and- trees are to be planted on the edge of the crater. The acquisitiQn of the crater marks the end of an agitation pursued for more than 23 years. The Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, has been a persistent worker in the cause. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates will officially open the drive and park on Saturday afternoon.
