CITY FIRE.
MID-DAY OUTBREAK. IN VICTORIA STREET; DAMAGE TO WORKSHOP. LOWER PORTIONS GUTTED. Some hundreds of people were attracted to Victoria Street West at lunchtime to-day, when the City Fire Brigade ■was observed rushing to a fire -which occurred in the premises of the Globe Picture-framers, conducted .by Mr. G. E. Spooner. Smoke permeated the, atmosphere_ in all directions and the sound of crashing class startled the crowd. The fire was located in the lower workroom behind the shop, and considerable damage was caused to stock in hand and jobs under W av. Mr. Spooner k a serious loser, as he was completing work which had to be .got .out to-day, and which there i s no means of replacing. . Mr. Spooner said that he did not know how the fire originated. Everything was all right at 12.10 p.m. His daughter went into the workroom from the C front of the shop, wrapped up a parcel for a customer, and then came out. Immediately afterwards the whole of the rear portions buret into flames. The brigade, under Superintendent Wilson, extinguished the flames with the and of chemicals and water. The upstairs rooms were not damaged. Insurance to the amount of £550 in the South British Company and £400 in the Commercial Union Assurance Company covered the stock. The building is owned by Mr. W. A. Blackie, of St. Stephen's" Avenue, Parnell.
