TRAM AND VAN COLLIDE.
SYMONDS STREET ACCIDENT.
MOTORIST ESCAPES INJURY.
Turning , suddenly to the. right in Lower Symonds Street, near St. Paul's Church, at 8 o'clock this morning, Mr. J. Neilson. of "The Willows," Symonds Street, brought his motor van broadside on to a city bound Mount Eden.car. ,So quick was the'turn that the niotorman ,had no chance' of averting a collision, though he instantly applied the brakes. The motor van was struck amidsliip, and pushed along for several yards, but, miraculously, Mr. Neilson escaped without so much as a scratch. His van, however, fared badly. The two right-hand wheels crumpled and let the chassis down on the roadway, while the fra'me\vork:.on the driver's side was splintered and stove in; The tramcar was v little damaged... ~,.,„,. - ".. Passengers in the tram were considernbly startled by .the impact, which was not so severe as it might hayebeen, as the motorman was slackening speed apnroaching the stop near Wellesley Street. The damaged car was quickly removed from the rails, and the tramway service was little affected by the accident.
