AIR PORT SITES.

TWO IN AUCKLAND. CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION. Two sites, each suitable for an air port, have for some time been under consideration by the Works Committee of the Auckland City Council. One is at Pollen Island, on the Avondale waterfront, and the other is at Point England on the shores of the Tamaki River. A visit was paid to the Pollen Island site by the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, and the Secretary of Marine (Mr. C. G. Godfrey), in company with a representative of the Auckland Aero Club during the week-end The matter was raised by Mr. G. W. Hutchison, a member of the City Council, when a motion requesting the Works Committee to investigate the areas available for the purpose was passed. The report was to be presented to the council not later than September, but' that date has since been extended.

Tlie report is to state whether the suitable areas are privately owned or are under the control of some authority other tlian the City Council; an estimate of the approximate cost of acquiring the areas and equipping theni for the purposes of an air port; and whether the establishment of a commercial air port is recognised in other countries as the duty of the municipal corporation, the harbour authority or the Government. Subsequent to the tour of inspection, the Mayor stated that, as the whole question was still under consideration by the committee, he was unable to make a statement.
